Johnson Books is a regional nonfiction publisher focusing on titles pertaining to Colorado and the West. We do not publish fiction or poetry. Please review our website to determine whether your book is a good fit with what we publish.
We are primarily interested in books for the informed popular market, though we will consider vividly written scholarly works. As a small publisher, we are able to give every submission close personal attention. We look for good writing, thorough research, professional presentation and appropriate style.
Please supply a cover letter with an outline and two or three sample chapters, or a writing sample sufficient for us to evaluate style and ability. Include a brief autobiography relevant to your credentials on the selected topic, along with a publishing history, if applicable. Entire manuscripts should not be sent until requested.
The author's ability to participate in the marketing of a book can be an important part of our evaluation, so specific and well-reasoned suggestions can be helpful as part of a proposal.
Unless you specifically request in writing that your materials be returned, and provide a self-addressed envelope with sufficient return postage, unaccepted proposals will be destroyed after consideration. Do not send original artwork or photographs until requested.
Please allow at least four months for a response to your unsolicited proposal. For a quicker response, include your email address.
